We delve into the fascinating world of human memory and cognition, exploring everyday phenomena such as involuntary and voluntary autobiographical memories, as well as intriguing experiences like déjà vu. Designed for both specialists and general audiences, our talk provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms shaping memory in daily life and highlights its role in cognition and emotion.

It’s all about remembering our personal past!

Krystian Barzykowski (Post-doc at Laboratoire de Psychologie & NeuroCognition, UGA)
Have you ever wondered how we remember our personal past? Each time you recall something you experienced, you're using autobiographical memory—a skill essential to daily life. Sometimes, memories pop into our minds unbidden. In this talk, I’ll explain the difference between involuntary and voluntary memories and explore how understanding them can enhance everyday living.

Déjà Vu: The Mind’s Probably Most Intriguing Quirk

Christopher Moulin (Professor, UGA)
Have you ever felt a strong sense of familiarity in a situation you know is entirely new? This phenomenon, known as déjà vu, is a striking experience that has puzzled researchers for decades. In this talk, I’ll explore what déjà vu is, how it might arise, and also introduce its opposite, jamais vu, work for which we gained an Ig Nobel prize.
