Did you know that biological sex can influence everything from how we fight infections to our risk of chronic disease? Yet, for decades, medical research has focused primarily on male bodies, leaving gaps in our understanding of half the population. Come explore the science behind these differences with us and see why closing the gender gap in research leads to better health outcomes for everyone.
Early immune response to UTI between the sexes
Laura Ramirez Finn
(PhD student - Cochin Institute)
Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) greatly impact the population, but are more common in women than in men. Why? The first 24 hours post-infection seem to hold the answer. Using a mouse model, we find that more bacteria enter the bladders of female mice, and their immune cells react faster. This early activation seems to help females fight off the infection, while delays in males may contribute to chronic UTIs. Understanding these differences could improve UTI treatment and prevention for everyone.

Decoding Immune Differences due to Sex & Lifestyle
Elizabeth MALONEY
(Postdoc Translational Immunology - Pasteur Institute)
Did you know females face up to 9 times the risk for autoimmune disease, while males are twice as vulnerable to non-reproductive cancers? In COVID-19 infection, males are at higher risk of death while females are at higher risk of long COVID. Why do these differences exist?
Dive into a French cohort study of 1000 healthy adults with us and explore how sex, age, and lifestyle shape our immune responses. Discover how factors like smoking, diet, and even body temperature interact with biological sex to impact our health defenses as we strive for health equity.
